Social Outreach Committee

Keep up with all that our parish is doing to help those less fortunate than us!

We are still collection food for the Chittenden County Emergency Food Shelf. In the back of each church, you will see signs like these to let you know what type of food we'll be collecting that week:

Minutes of 10.4.2017 Meeting

Present: Msgr. McDermott, Eve Dubois, Maureen O’Connell, Roger Gibeault, Anne McGrath, Susan Chamberlain, Bert Baker, Teri Burrell, Carol Ploof

Committee Name & Mission: We changed our name to the Social Outreach Committee with this mission statement: Bringing the love of Our Lord to others through the corporal works of mercy.”

Roger reported for Mary on Decker Towers: One prayer meeting was held.  Father Joseph (Sanderson) hopes to do prayer meetings/visits with interested residents monthly and already visited one former parishioner. We are in the process of trying to set up a space for Fr Joseph to say mass on Thursday October 26. Regular visitors to Decker Towers would need to enroll. Residents need help with food at the end of the month, and the Food Shelf can provide one bag of perishables and one bag of non-perishables per resident on the fourth Thursday of the month—but drivers are needed around 10:30 a.m. to transport the food to Decker Towers. George (not present) would have more details. Once we know, we will put a request in the bulletin for drivers.

Thanksgiving Baskets: Msgr. will work with Robin to resurrect bulletin announcements from last year asking parishioners for donations to fill the baskets. Who needs baskets? Last year, Susan E-L dealt with Champlain School (10-15 baskets); Eve handled Lund (10 baskets); Julie Benz touched base with Lawrence Barnes Sustainability Academy (5 baskets)… Bert B. will follow up on them this year. Assembling baskets: Sunday, Nov. 19. (time?) Roger is getting boxes, Bert talked to 5th grade teacher Liz Gillis… Msgr. will follow up with Liz to see if 5th grade wants to help decorate the boxes. Ordering turkeys: Msgr. will talk turkey with Ray LeBlanc to see about ordering them wholesale this year.

Regular donations: Anne will pick up peanut butter, etc. donations from CKC and take to Food Shelf; will count donations for competitive tallies. Toiletries go to Cathederal; diapers go to VT Refugee Resettlement (but who is delivering those?)

Angel Tree: Ramping up soon! Teri is handling again this year. The goal is to get trees up with tags by the Feast of Christ the King (Sun., Nov. 26). The challenge is to get lists from agencies early enough to make this happen.

Maureen reported on Mercy Connections: They wonder if we would like to provide lunch (entree, salad, fruit, dessert) for 35-40 people twice a year (Thursdays) at their facility on So. Champlain St. Msgr. thinks this could be a good project for CKS after-school baking/cooking club, or Junior National Honor Society project.

Next meeting Wed., Nov. 1 at 6:30pm St. Anthony's Conference Room
